Ubuntu 11.04 Features Confirmed – Libreoffice, Firefox, Banshee and Unity

The Coming release of Ubuntu is codenamed Natty Narwhall. The Features of Ubuntu 11.04 confirmed. 11.04 will be shipped with Libreoffice as its default office application, Banshee replaces Rythembox as its default music player, Firefox 4 will be the default browser, .

Ubuntu is deviating from Gnome Development stream gnome 3.0 . Ubuntu 11.04 include unity as its default desktop environment insted of Gnome 3.0. Because 3.0 is under development and will be released on April 2011. And Currenly the Window manager mutter is not completely supporting compiz fusion. Unity is already the default desktop environment for Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition. Mark Shuttleworth consider this shift to Unity as the most significant change ever for Ubuntu.

Unity Desktop – Concepts to Reality

Unity is the greatest change to the Ubuntu desktop till date. You will  able to get your hands on a completely new form of desktop, replete with features competing head on with other major operating systems. The UI is built upon Ubuntu’s netbook interface called UNE, and is quite similar to Gnome Shell but build on Compiz. However Unity, unlike Gnome3 and UNE, will be using the Compiz window manager instead of Mutter(which many users found to be slow and buggy). Also, many new and useful indicator applets are being developed which will help users add more functionality to a fresh installation. With Unity, Ubuntu 11.04 takes a completely new direction that will surely grab attention of desktop and netbook users alike.

Nautilus elementary will not be the default file browser. It was later rejected on the grounds that “patches were considered hacks”.

  1. Once again, GNOME 3.0 DOES NOT equal GNOME Shell. 11.04 will include Unity instead of the Shell, but will include GNOME 3.0.
