Install restricted extras and utilities in Linux system is a real pain and time consuming. We are saying that all the hardware drivers are taken in linux automatically but we want to install mp3 support, rar support, acobat reader and lot more … also it require a good internet connection and good command line knowledge. That is why Linux mint is so popular. It is coming with all the codecs and the programmes which everyday user needed. In Ubuntu we want to install GIMP itself. In fedora you will get a DVD full of programmes with all kind. But you need another 300 MB of download for VLC, Gstreamer, FFMPEG etc…
Here are some small scripts to reduce your pressure. In Ubuntu there is Ubuntu tweak.
In Fedora you will not find any one click solution like Ubuntu tweak. If you search ubuntu tweak in fedora you will get an old rpm of ubuntu tweak.
In fedora you will have a hand full of these kind of utilities.
Ailurus
Ailurus is cross-Linux-distribution GPL software, which aims at making Linux easier to use for beginners. You can use this software with Fedora, Ubuntu and other distributions. It comes with a neat rpm or deb system. You can install programmes, Inspect computer misconfigurations, clear cache to free space, inspect for updates etc are done with one click.
Features
- Install many useful applications easily.
- Enable a number of third party repositories quite easily.
- Display of basic hardware information which is so useful at times.
- Clean APT/YUM cache.
- Backup and recover APT/YUM status.
- Change GNOME settings. Ailurus invokes GConf API, to change GNOME settings.
- Easily enable Gnome Control Center using Ailurus.
Autoplus
Autoplus is an easier application to setup and it comes with a .rpm and once installed, you can run it from the menu. But it comes with fewer options than fedora utils. You can only install / uninstall Adobe Flash, codecs, Google Earth, Skype, Sun Java, VirtualBox, WinFF, Imagination, Cinelerra, Hugin Panorama Creator, Lightscribe, Dropbox, extra backgrounds and sudo with or without password for current user. And of course, it also adds all the repositories required to install these applications.
Fedora Utils
chmod +x fedorautils-1.4.0
su -
./fedorautils-1.4.0
Applications which you can install using Fedora Utils include: Adobe Flash, codecs, Sun Java, Adobe Air, Wine, Google Earth, GTalk plugin, MS Truetype Fonts and other “Essential Software”. And as opposed to Autoplus, using Fedora Utils you can install multiple applications at once.
Another interesting feature in Fedora Utils is that it saves the downloaded applications in the “Fedora Utils” folder in your home directory which can be very useful if you have poor / limited Internet connectivity.
